WHAT IS the Transport Project

The Transport Project is a pioneer initiative created to provide specialized technical support to fleets of tanker trucks that are filled up at Petrobras, looking at aspects related to the environment, consumption savings and flammable fuel transportation safety. The project’s characteristics are guidance and education. Use of opacity meters certified by Inmetro in line with methodological processes approved by Petrobras in projects in the transportation industry. The services are provided free of charge and don’t create additional delay in the loading routine.

Project’s OBJECTIVES:

Project Transport’s objective is to aid flammable fuel carriers in reducing black smoke emissions, save diesel oil and maintain the tanker trucks always in good conditions, targeted at flammable fuel carriers who use the refineries’ loading terminal.

The project’s goals are to:

  • Reduce black smoke emissions.
  • Improve air quality.
  • Save Diesel Oil
  • Contribute to the safety of flammable fuel transportation.
  • Propagate a culture of social responsibility.

The Project Hands On: REVAP’S experience (Henrique Lage Refinery)

At the Pit Stop initially installed at the Henrique Lage Refinery’s loading terminal (Revap) in the City of São José dos Campos, technicians trained by Petrobras evaluate the tanker trucks free of charge, analyzing the quality of the diesel used, the vehicles’ maintenance status and the opacity of the smoke released into the atmosphere.

After this evaluation, they issue a report to the driver containing orientations that lay out a methodology for following-up on fuel consumption and tips for the truck driver to save diesel and lower transportation costs.

The Pit Stop is located next to the truck yard at the terminal’s entrance. The evaluation is made during the loading waiting time, without affecting the terminal’s operational routine. The services are provided free of charge. All drivers have to do is go to the location and the project’s technicians will be ready to serve them.

A summary of the process:

  • The project is presented to the drivers.
  • The vehicle is moved to the Pit Stop.
  • The vehicle is identified.
  • Diesel consumption follow-up starts.
  • Emission tests are made using the digital opacity meter.
  • Visual color classification of smoke.
  • Diesel used in the vehicle is evaluated.
  • Visual inspection preformed to evaluate the vehicle’s overall conditions.
  • If necessary, additional comments are made.
  • The vehicle’s evaluation report is issued and drivers receive orientations.

Results

By the second-half of 2004, the Transport Project has made over 3,000 inspections in over 1,800 vehicles. Approximately 300 different companies participated in the testing action. The efforts and dedicated work by the project’s team members resulted in 15% reductions in diesel consumption, and prevented the emission of 38,000 tons/year of CO2.
